DAY ONE
I dragged my sorry ass out of bed early Saturday morning, packed up the car and drove to the
Alternative Press Expo (APE), held at the rickety
Concourse Building in San Francisco. Jizzcannon was nice enough to come along and keep me company all day.
Like at all first days at a convention, this one was awkward and a little disappointing, but the wonderful neighbors made up for it. Paper Chase Printing was to our right, and the fact that they printed
Jill Greenberg's End Times booklet and had a few samples of it on display gave them novelty power from the start. They drove all the way up from LA to hang with a bunch of nerds, without a chance of walking away with cold cash – sounds a little too familiar!
To our very-immediate right was Inkless Quill Collective, a group of fresh-faced San Francisco types with some zines and hand-made merch to sell. I noticed a lot more craft-based tables this year than I did last year, but I think it added variety and perhaps gave the show a wider appeal for attendees who aren't necessarily into the comic scene, and are perhaps just tagging along with someone who is.
By 11:30, I was really wired from a cappuccino and from dipping into the free candy jar on our table too many times. However, it gave me enough courage to walk over to
Mal and
Hope's table, where I practically threw an OCAD book at them and then left without getting any feedback - but I think that subjecting them to a few minutes of my jittery self was enough.
A few peeps from BAAU were out and about, and they had a table on the other side of the hall, so I zoomed over there a few times. I really was too sugared out for my own good – actually, I'm pretty embarrassed about the whole thing when I think about it now.
A few hours into the day, I realized that I could put the posterboard I brought to good use, and I taped it down onto half of the table with a "Draw something!!"
DAY TWO
I went alone the next day and got set up right before the show started. Since I didn't need all of the table, I let the gracious
Rob Thompson from Inkless Quill Collective display his wares on half of it. His $2 robot drawings were quite a hit, and I scored one along with his group's zine, Plate Lunch. Part of the zine can be viewed on Rob's site, and I might try to get permission to post the totally hilarious rant about people who wear fedoras that one of their group wrote.
The day before, I had picked up a copy of
Crater on the Moon: Story of a Space Marine #5. I really wish that their website was up right now, because it is too awesome to be described with words.
From the very generous
Calvin Wong I got vols. 1 & 2 of Ortolan, by
XIP Publication Centre, and
Automat by Calvin. I haven't finished reading them yet, but they are Top Quality Super!
The very sweet
tanukinao was selling a cute little sketchbook called Girls in Graphite. I managed to finagle her into drawing a pic of Fiona, and I think it turned out Kickass Awesome.
I took a different approach to the "Draw something!!" idea and covered the whole table in paper this time. While I was listening to Hope and Mal's panels, people took the liberty of drawing all over the table. It was a nice surprise :3
Stone from OCAD days of yore dropped by, and I traded him a book for a sexy monkey.
I forced a book on
locke and sold 3 more. I packed up and left promptly at 6pm when the show ended.
